The five member states of the East African Community (EAC) - Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda and Burundi - are characterised by high energy prices, insufficient and thus unreliable supply of electricity and low rates of electrification. This situation is holding back industrial and commercial production. In 2005 the EAC published the East-African Power Master Plan which provides solutions to the major energy problem of its member states. The strategy of the Master Plan is to exploit resources and to transmit them among the countries to assure a constant supply.
Especially renewable energies provide viable solutions, as they have a high potential in the region and are largely unexploited. Energy generating resources may be:
Given this situation with high demand and high possibilities for supply, there are opportunities in private sector investment for German and African businesses. The transfer of modern technologies and investments from Germany into the energy sector is a win-win scenario for both East African businesses and for high-tech companies in Germany / Europe. The planned conference is a high profile platform for company executives, technology experts and decision makers from governments.
